the winners of the Victor J. Papanek Social Design Award sponsored by
The Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Victor J. Papanek
Foundation at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and the Austrian
Cultural Forum New York.
Joachim and Aiolova of Terreform One and Planetary One were selected for their project Urbaneering Brooklyn 2110: Ecological City of the Future, a design for an intensified version of Brooklyn that supplies all vital needs for its population. 10.29.2011
Plenary Speaker at SVA Embodied Fantasies
Embodied Fantasies, International Conference at the School of Visual Arts, NY; a concept central to
art history, theory and practice is concurrently a topic debated in the
fields of the neuro- and cognitive sciences, philosophy and
phenomenology. This theme will be addressed in a transdisciplinary
conference hosting scholars and artists from the fields of architecture,
art history, visual art, history of science and psychology among
others. Discussions will focus on concepts of embodiment as they relate
to sexuality, aesthetics, epistemology, perception and fantasy itself.
Approaches to the role of fantasies will be viewed beyond traditional
conceptions to include complex thinking processes, subjectivity, and the
inter-subjective. Prominent attention will be paid to fantasies and
images as a form of knowledge production.

Curved buildings with mushroom roofs! Giant 3D printers spewing out ships! Swarms of high-tech workers making electric cars! It’s all part of “Super Dock,” a futuristic science park designed by radical eco-architects Mitchell Joachim, Maria Aiolova and Nurhan Gokturk of Planetary One, an urban design firm on Flatbush Avenue. “There are no walls,” Joachim said. “We’re merging architecture and land into the water. The entire area becomes a ballast for Brooklyn, so it can absorb water, clean it and filter it back into New York.” Joachim believes that the 12-by-8-foot prototype is not too ahead of its time.

Mitchell Joachim, Planetary ONE, and Terreform has been selected as Finalists in the Design for the Real World Redux: An International Design Competition and Exhibition: Museum of Arts and Design in New York in partnership with the Victor J. Papanek Foundation at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Austrian Cultural Forum NYC. The winning entries will be featured in exhibitions held at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (November 10, 2011-January 31, 2012) and at the Museum of Arts and Design and/or the Austrian Cultural Forum New York (March 6-June 17, 2012) depending on the number of finalists.

Innovation Spaces Terreform ONE is a non-profit design group that promotes green design in cities. It is based in Brooklyn, New York. At Terreform ONE we need ‘messy’ spaces to create a massive outpouring of projects and models. We have a collection of materials and artifacts found throughout the city of New York that add to the environment. These seemingly random objects are essential to helping us formulate complex morphologies into tangible suppositions. Design is seeing new qualities in everyday objects. We surround ourselves with these seemingly random items to be inspired just so. CREATUREAMA: ArchiBots of Styrofoam Refuse
The workshop of Terreform ONE for the Architektursommer Rhein-Main 2011 rethinks and up-cycles what the city of Darmstadt throws away permanently. They produce tons of urban e-waste on a daily basis. A large portion of this waste is the packing material itself. Terreform uses these discarded elements to architecturally sketch figures and follies. By structurally joining the packing material we bring a kind of eerie creature to fruition. Each object is intended to communicate appropriate information about the energy and ecological balance of an urban site by additional light color coding.
Das Projekt von Terreform lenkt den Blick auf das, was wir permanent wegwerfen. Täglich produzieren wir Tonnen von Abfall und sind dabei selbst in der Lage Einfluss auf diese Entwicklung zu nehmen. Terreform One baut daraus Figuren und Elemente. Die Zusammenfügung der Verpackungen bringt vertraute, aber auch gespenstische Kreaturen hervor, die mit entsprechender Farbgebung und Codierung Informationen über die Energie- und Ökobilanz des Ortes mitteilen sollen.
